Development
is the process by which a country is able to undergo change to improve
standards of living and life in general. Whilst all countries want to
develop, the speed of this development varies greatly between countries.
Globally, there are great inequalities in countries' level of development
between. the richer countries of the North are (MEDCs) and the poorer
countries of the south (LEDCs). But how do we determine which countries
are MEDCs and which are LEDCs?
This unit will enable you to develop a
better understanding of the concept of development and the indicators that
are commonly used to assess how developed a country is. In order to
develop LEDCs must overcome many problems. You will be looking in
particular at the problem of lack of clean water, a problem
which
remains a major obstacle to economic development in so many countries.
People in many third world countries without access to reliable water and
adequate sanitation are trapped in a viscous cycle of poverty and disease.
