Year 9 - JAPAN

Unit Summary

Concepts Covered

Resources

Japan consists of four large islands (Honshu; Hokkaido; Shikoku and Kyushu) as well as many smaller ones, all formed by volcanic processes. The physical environment has had a significant impact on the lives of the Japanese. Less than 20% of the island is flat enough for farming or settlement and the Japanese have actually reclaimed land from the sea in places like Tokyo in order to provide more land for housing and in particular industry. The Japanese have also had to adapt their lifestyles in order to live with a number of hazards such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis (tidal waves) and typhoons (hurricanes). Japan has a fascinating culture and in this unit you will have the opportunity to study both the traditional and modern ways of life in Japan, including Japanese Homes, culture, customs, clothes, food and even language! Enjoy!
