Egypt Glossary

Aswan Dam - Important dam opened in Egypt in 1970 to control flooding and provide water all year round.

Cairo - The capital of Egypt

Delta - an area of deposited silt at the mouth of a river

Desert - an area which has very little rainfall

Irrigation - artificial watering of the land

Gallabiya - long Egyptian robe made from cotton

LEDC - Less Economically Developed Country

Rural-urban migration - the movement of people from the countryside to the city

Saquia - irrigation device with a wheel and buckets - as the wheel turns, buckets empty water into an irrigation channel.

Shaduf - irrigation device - a long pole with a bucket on one end and a heavy weight on the other (weight allows the full bucket to be swung round to the irrigation channel).

Shanty Town - an area of very poor housing, lacking electricity, water supply and sewage system

Silt - fine soil left after a river floods
