Year 8 - ANTARCTICA

Unit Summary

Concepts Covered

Resources

Antarctica is a cold desert, it is said to contain 85% of the worlds glacial ice. Due to its harsh conditions and icy surface, no-one permanently lives on Antarctica and no vegetation can grow there. It is a large continent covering one tenth of the worlds surface. Whilst there are few different species, there are large numbers of wildlife found in Antarctica, including seal, penguin and killer whale. The aim of this unit is for you to explore the physical conditions of this icy wilderness and the interactions between the life forms that are able to survive there. You will also be investigating the increasing threats that Antarctica is under from exploitation by man. This environment, whilst harsh, has many useful resources, and problems caused by activities such as overfishing and tourism have become a cause for concern. Scientists and environmental groups have been raising awareness of the need to protect this unique environment and this is your opportunity to study it in more detail.
