A
settlement is quite simply a place where people live. Settlements vary in
size from villages to large cities. This unit aims to explore the reasons
why settlements have grown up where they are. What are the advantages of
their locations? Different sizes of settlements can be ordered by what is
called a Settlement Hierarchy, the capital city being at the top, working
down in size. You are going to use your OS maps and atlases to try and
draw up a local settlement hierarchy. Finally you are going to draw
together the ideas you have looked using St Ives as a case study of a
medium sized market town.
