Mt Etna Blows her top

On the 17th July 2001 a serious eruption began on Sicily's active volcano, Mount Etna sending lava flowing down its southern flank. AS flows of lava headed for the communities living on the slopes of the volcano, a state of emergency was declared. Embankments were used in an attempt to prevent the lava reaching the surrounding towns and helicopters circled the area dousing the hot lava with water to try and slow its flow. These efforts however failed to suppress the volcanic force.
