Brownfield SiteDisused and derelict land which is redeveloped and built on
Greenfield siteAn area of land that has not been built on before
Shanty TownAn area of poor quality housing in an LEDC city
GreenbeltAn area of land around a large urban area where the development of housing is restricted and land is protected
Urban RedevelopmentThe demolition and re-building of an area
Urban RegenerationThe improvement and modernisation of buildings in an inner city area that has declined
GentrificationImproving the quality / appearance of a property so it attracts people wealthier than those who had previously lived in the area
Settlement HierarchyThe ordering of settlements according to their size and importance
Range of a goodThe maximum distance people are prepared to travel to obtain a good or service
Threshold populationThe minimum number of people need to support a service so it can stay open
Sphere of InfluenceThe area served by a particular settlement
High order goodsUsually high cost goods, bought now and again e.g. TV's and furniture
Low order goodsUsually low cost goods needed often e.g. Milk and Newspapers
Neighbourhood Shopping CentreGroup of low order shops (e.g. newsagents, bakers) serving an area within a town (e.g. Kings Hedges, St Ives)
Rural-urban migrationThe movement of people from rural areas into towns and cities
