The new Geography GCSE syllabus states that you must use ICT at appropriate points in your coursework project. Although you do not have to word process your project, we would advise you to do so if you do have access to a computer. The reason for this, is that word processing packages such as WORD allow you to save your work and easily make any changes or additions to your work at any stage. As you work through your coursework it is inevitable that you will check through your work and even want to add bits in, using a word processor will allow you to do this. If it is not possible for you to use a word processor to complete the whole project, then make use of the computers in school to show that you have made some use of ICT, for example in creating graphs or maps. Up to 5 marks are available for the use of ICT in the mark scheme.

The following ideas are possible ways in which you could make use of ICT to help you during your coursework - they are only suggestions:

COLLECT AND PROCESS DATA

  • Use a word processing package to create data collection sheets
  • Use AEGIS 3 to create base maps of the four streets which you can then label / draw on.
  • Use AEGIS 3 to store land-use data which can then be easily processed.
  • Access secondary data - e.g. background on St Ives, using websites and the resources available on the geography site.

PRESENTING DATA

  • Use digital photographs to show street layouts, traffic restrictions, types of buildings etc.. (These can be annotated using text boxes and arrows, or labelled in paint or a similar programme);
  • Use AEGIS 3 (the schools GIS) system to draw up land-use classification maps;
  • Use EXCEL or similar package to create Graphs and Charts;
  • Scan in maps and photographs which can then be labelled / altered using paint, word etc..

ANALYSING DATA AND REACHING CONCLUSIONS

  • Use a word processing package to write up your coursework - this can be helpful for drafting and changing your work and moving sections around as necessary. You can also make use of the spell checker and grammar checker.
  • Use AEGIS 3 to analyse your data - e.g. search for the location of National Chain Stores within St Ives;
