Across the Market Hill from the Golden Lion stood another 'Commercial Hotel', the Fountain. All the hotels and pubs at this end of the town did a good trade on market days, and were less affected than the pubs in the Broadway when the markets moved to their new site. The Fountain may appear unfamiliar in the old Maddison and Hinde photograph, but a comparison with the modern picture shows that most of the building has survived intact, except for the new shop front on the ground floor.
