of Town in 1971 Graphs showing developments
Population in 1971: 7,148
| The 1978 Town Centre Plan recorded
"the removal of unnecessary traffic from the town centre is still
the most urgent and significant problem", therefore a second
river crossing was critical for further expansion. Road links were not
improved until 1980 when the new two-lane river crossing and eastern
bypass were completed. |
| The working population during the
1970s was close to the number of jobs available and the percentage of
economically active people decreased as students remained in full-time
education. |
| The 1974 local Plan
misjudged population growth, the plan predicted a population of 16,000
by 1981, but the population only reached this in 1999! |
