The population increased by 21% between 1931 and 1951. Population in 1951: 3,078

The Huntingdonshire County Development Plan of 1951 recorded that "one of the principal anxieties today arises in consequence of the seroius shortage of suitable accommodation for housing the population."
The plan underestimated the rise of population between 1951 and 1971 and resulted in a lack of services in the future.

1950s Green Leys and High Leys built to accommodate an increase in population after the Second World War.

1951 Huntingdonshire development plan confirmed the urgent requirement for a second river crossing identified in the 1947 Rural Plan. Its suggested route was to be to the west of the town, but after discussions and planning, an eastern route would better facilitate a new relief road for the town centre, which was very congested.
1954 The county education plan recognised the need for a Secondary Modern School and an Infant and Junior School between 1951 - 56. In 1954 St Ivo Senior School was opened
1959 Beginning of the end of the Railway in St Ives. One of the rail routes from St Ives to Huntingdon was closed on the 15th June
