SCOTTISH ASSOCIATION OF GEOGRAPHY TEACHERS

ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2006

Saturday October 28th 2006

On Saturday 28th October I was due to attend the SAGT annual conference where I had been asked to run a seminar session called "Making a Departmental Website Work for you" based on my experience in writing GeoBytes. The full programme of events can be downloaded here whilst a summary of the aims of my seminar (as stated in the programme) and links to the presentation and handouts used on the day can be downloaded below. Unfortunately due to illness whilst on a school trip to Kenya, resulting in a hospital stay and a delayed journey home, I was unable to attend. My sincere apologies to any conference delegates that were due to attend my presentation during the conference - I have posted all the materials I had prepared for the conference below. Please feel free to e-mail me rchambers.cgz@e2bn.net if you have questions or if I can be of any help whatsoever.

Seminar 5 - Making a Departmental Website Work for you Rob Chambers, Teacher of Geography St Ivo School, St Ives, Cambridgeshire

This seminar will explore the ways in which a department website can play a key role in promoting effective teaching and learning in a Geography department.

The main focus of this seminar will be to consider the role a departmental website can play in supporting effective teaching and learning. Although consideration will be given to key issues related to setting up, developing and maintaining a department website, the emphasis will be on looking at how a department can get the most from its website through looking at a case study of the departmental website of St Ivo School Geography Department www.geobytes.org.uk . This will include the provision of online coursework and homework materials, virtual fieldtrips, interactive games, support for independent learning and centralising department resources. With the increasing emphasis on the use of learning platforms to provide personalised learning spaces for students, the next step in the development of the department website may be the creation of a virtual learning environment. This seminar will also begin to consider some of the benefits of a VLE for supporting independent learning in Geography.
