WHY GEOGRAPHY?

We are constantly exposed to geographical issues in everyday life, including; environmental concerns; natural disasters; world weather; local developments; urban and rural change; population movements; maps and travel. It is then surprising that Geography is a popular option choice at AS and A2. Students are provided with an opportunity to develop an awareness and understanding of the patterns, processes and relationships that characterise human and physical environments.

Traditionally geography is seen as a bridge between the arts and sciences, enabling students to keep their options open. Geography also complements many AS/A2 subject combinations.

These include in particular:

Sciences (biology, physics & chemistry)
Sports Studies
Business studies and economics
History
English and Mathematics

Features of the Department

two specialist rooms are designated solely for sixth form teaching;
the department has access to the schools ICT facilities, including access to a new suite located within the department.
a strong interest in fieldwork to support AS and A2 units.
the department is well resourced and students are provided with a range of support.

COURSE OUTLINE: Edexcel GCE Specification A

Why follow Edexcel Specification A?

The Edexcel geography specification (A) offers a strong foundation in both physical and human geography and in practical skills. It addresses many themes which will be important during this millennium such as concern for the environment and an appreciation of global changes and inequalities. The specification allows students to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of physical, human and environmental geography whilst also enabling students to recognise and explore the interrelationships between physical and human environments in a synoptic context. Fieldwork is important there is an opportunity to produce an individual investigative study which is assessed as coursework rather than being the subject of an examination. The course will also offer students the opportunity to achieve maximum key skills development.

Entry Requirements

What will I need to be accepted on the course?

Five GCSEs grade C and above with a grade B in geography, is the minimum requirement for entry to AS and A2 level courses, together with the recommendation of your GCSE subject teacher.

SUPPORTING GEOGRAPHY LEARNING AT AS AND A2

Fieldwork

Fieldwork plays a very important role in supporting the teaching and learning of any geography course and at St Ivo fieldwork and practical 'hands-on' geography is given a high priority in the department. It can effectively enable students to experience at first hand landscapes, people, places and issues bringing classroom theory to life! We endeavour to provide a wide-range of experiences as far as possible within the time-constraints of an advanced level course. Students are given the opportunity to learn and develop geographical skills, and practical observation and interpretation of geographical features, supporting concepts introduced in the classroom whilst providing an enjoyable experience for all.

The school and the department believe that student safety is of paramount important at all times during fieldwork and fieldwork is always led by a suitable number of well qualified staff.

As well as supporting classroom learning by bringing theory to life, fieldwork is a compulsory component of the course for Unit 3a in which students are expected to conduct fieldwork for their personal investigations.
